Itinerary
Participate in an authentic winter adventure at Algonquin Park's north west corner.Ski across frozen lakes and snowshoe through waist deep snow. Learn winter backcountry travel skills from seasoned guides. Rest tired bones in the wood fired sauna and sleep in Log Cabin comfort.
This Duke of Edinburgh winter expedition focuses on off-the-beaten path outdoor exploration and backcountry travel skills. While no winter experience is necessary, these line of participatory adventures are intended for active people who have some outdoor experience and are looking for authentic adventure.
The Algonquin Log Cabin and winter wall tent are the base for the four nights. Located on Surprise Lake, just a few kilometres west of Algonquin Park, the log cabin features double occupancy bedrooms with shared indoor washrooms, as well as a sauna and shower cabin. Group size is limited to 12.
Monday (Day 1)
Arrive at the Algonquin Log Cabin.
Afternoon winter expedition orientation and practice.
Dinner and acomodation at the Algonquin Log Cabin.
Tuesday(Day 2)
Breakfast, pack out and head out on snowshoes hauling toboggans towards our wall tent base on Surprise Lake. Learn about heated prospector tents and how to travel safely on lakes and rivers. Get basecamp ready with wood and water. Dinenr prepaeration and acommodation in the heated wall tent.
Wednesday ( Day 3 )
After a hearty Canadian breakfast, pack a lunch and head out on skis to explore the backcountry around Music Lake. Return to the heated wall tent at Moose Bay for dinner.
Accommodation heated wall tent.
Thursday ( day 4 )
Snowshoe or ski around Kitchie Island.
Sample traditional and modern snowshoes as you explore the Ridge trail around Kettle lake.
Backcountry baking workshop, sample wild tea's, dinner and acoomodation in the heated wall tent.
Friday ( day 5 )
Pack out and snowshoe back to the Algonquin Log Cabin for a sauna and hot lunch.
Optional 2:30pm train transfer back to Toronto
COST
The all-inclusive price from Algonquin Park is $620 per person plus HST
Return transportation from Toronto is available for $175 on the Ontario Northland Train. Group prices and custom dates are available for groups of 10 or more.
The cost includes: four nights accommodation, meals, fully guided excursions including backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, wildlife track interpretation, all equipment, park permits, and services of a wilderness instructor.
The cost does not include: personal clothing and HST.
HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE DO YOU NEED? WHAT KIND OF SHAPE DO YOU NEED TO BE IN?
While no previous winter experience is necessary, you should have wilderness camping experience and be willing to participate in a group setting. Our objective is to have fun, try snowshoeing and backcountry skiing and relax and explore the beauty of Surprise Lake. You should be in good physical condition ie able to be active (walking pace) for a day trip on skis or snowshoes that would last for up to six hours.
RELEASE OF LIABILITY
Each participant will be required to sign and return to Voyageur Quest a Release of Liability before being allowed to participate in any trip we offer. This document releases Voyageur Quest from liability in the case of accident or injury for any reason.
