Position: Algonquin Winter Wilderness Guide

ALGONQUIN WINTER WILDERNESS GUIDES

Voyageur Quest is looking for Algonquin Winter Guides as Log Cabin guides, naturalists, and outdoor educational leaders to work winter lodge-based interpretative programs at the Algonquin Log Cabin and Algonquin Cottage Outpost. Applicants should have strong leadership skills and be comfortable speaking about Algonquin flora, fauna, night sky and local culture in front of an adult commercial, outdoor education, and family market. Strong interpretative and program skills are essential.

Applicants should have the following certifications, skills, and experience:

  • Ability to Snowshoe
  • Ability to Backcountry ski
  • Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA), Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or equivalent
  • Strong Nature and Wildlife interpretation
  • Ice Safety knowledge ideally certification
  • Strong guiding and leadership experience in a wilderness environment
  • Commercial hospitality experience (with serving meals, kitchen help, lodge welcomes) and a strong desire to optimize customer satisfaction
  • Love being outdoors in the winter
  • Clear and satisfactory criminal record check
  • A driver’s license and a car is an asset to get you to and from the Algonquin Log Cabin and for your days off.
  • Though we love them, we are unable to allow pets as accommodation is shared and both customers and staff experience allergies and so on.

Contracts Available: early December 2023 to approx 3rd week in March 2024
Training: Typically first week in December 2023 and still to be confirmed weather dependent.
Salary: $175-250 per day (as per ESA, commensurate with certifications, experience and leadership) plus guests tip to staff directly.
Other: Shared accommodation available. Staff overnight at staff accommodation while scheduled guiding a trip and typically return to their homes when they have several days off.

2024 ALGONQUIN PARK LOG CABIN, CANOE TRIP and HIKING GUIDE

Position: Algonquin Park Log Cabin, Canoe Trip and Hiking Guide Contracts available from: now until mid-Oct or Sept 1 to end-Sept/mid Oct, 2024 Type: Part-time, Full-time, or occasional, season contract approx 2 months Terms: Per diem wage plus tips, Lakeside accommodation, and more (see below)
Organization: Voyageur Quest Location: based out of Algonquin Park Access Pt #1, east of South River, Ontario Voyageur Quest is looking for Log Cabin and Canoe guides to work 3 and 5-day canoe trips, 3-day Log Cabin trips at the northwest corner of Algonquin Park, and some hiking trips just outside the Greater Toronto Area – for our 2024 end of summer and fall season. In addition to having an exceptional canoe-tripping and wilderness camping background, applicants should have strong leadership skills and be comfortable speaking about Algonquin flora, fauna, night sky, and local culture in front of an adult commercial and family market. Solid interpretative and program skills are essential. Our guides love to teach our guests about the wonders of Algonquin Park. Warmth and hospitality skills are essential.
Other Responsibilities include:
  • packing-in and out trip food and group gear (cleaning and reporting repairs)
  • inspiring, faciliating, teaching, leading and supervising our guests to ensure safety and wellbeing
  • Risk management
  • Adminstration trip reporting where applicable
Applicants should have the following certifications:
  • ORCKA Canoe Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA 40 hrs) or Red Cross Wilderness First Aid equivalent
  • Swimming Certification – Bronze Cross/NL or Swift Water Rescue
  • Canoe Tripping – ORCKA or Paddle Canada certifications ideally Orcka CT 3
All Guides must have:
– Strong leadership experience in a wilderness environment – Exceptionally strong canoe tripping background preferably in a commercial setting – Clear and satisfactory criminal record background check – Driver’s license strongly preferred – a personal paddle, PFD, and tent for tripping – comprehensive wilderness first aid kit

Algonquin Wilderness Food Service Coordinator and Cook
The Voyageur Quest Algonquin Wilderness Food Service Coordinator and Cook supports the needs of the Algonquin Log Cabin (serving groups of 4 to 18), the Broken Paddle Patio (serving small groups for breakfast or bbq dinners), Canoe trips and Special Events. The Food service coordinator and cook is responsible for cooking, preparing and serving meals to VQ visitors while ensuring Food Safety standards and kitchen policies are followed.   The Food Service Coordinator cooks, plans for dietary restrictions, problem solves menu issues, sets up the online orders, may shop or pick up orders, and ensures the maintenance of the kitchens.  

The VQ Algonquin Wilderness Food Service Coordinator and Cook’s  responsibilities include:inventory, ordering, planning, shopping, preparing healthy and tasty meals in an open “off the grid” kitchen ensuring food safety practices.

Applicants should have: excellent organization skills, ability to work in a small team and a background/understanding of food, menu, cooking and baking, a special appreciation for Algonquin Park and our wilderness “off the grid” environment and a love of connecting with people. 

Duties & Responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Cooking/serving food for visitors to the site.  Includes preparing special needs diets for allergies and food restrictions.  Ensuring special diet requests and needs are met at each meal is a must.
  • Has a strong understanding of nutrition and cooking recipes including special diets.
  • Ensures the kitchen is running smoothly. Establishes a positive relationship with Wilderness Guides and other coordinators. Anticipates and deals proactively with problems.
  • Oversees the implementation of food practices relevant to the dietary restrictions and allergies.
  • Prepares meals and ensures best practice cleaning practices. 
  • Fosters a positive and nurturing environment between kitchen and program wilderness guiding staff.
  • Interacting and communicating with visitors – an emphasis on relationship building and positive communication with visitors is key.
  • Implements safety procedures in the kitchen. 
  • Preventative and ongoing kitchen maintenance and cleaning

Qualifications:

    • Safe Food Handler’s Certificate.
    • College Diploma or University degree 
    • A minimum of two (2) years of considerable position related experience required.
    • Considerable experience preparing special diets is a strong asset.  Special diets include but are not limited to: Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, and allergies etc. 
    • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, good problem solving skills, and the ability to work within a small team.
    • Must have email and telephone to communicate with the office. 
    • Drivers license and Car to get to and from work – days off.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, leadership and problem-solving skills
    • Red Seal cook or other cook certification (college or other) an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including a Vulnerable Sector Screening)

Position:  General Operations Support Crew
Dates: May – end August or mid October

Outfitter Crew

As Outfitter Crew you will be responsible for assisting customers in checking into their cottages, setting up their canoe and gear rentals at our outfitter and offering general operations support. 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Client-facing payment and booking processing for canoe and gear rentals and store purchases
  • Cottage and Cabin check-ins 
  • Phone, email and in-person inquiries and reservations 
  • Ongoing communications with office and guides
  • Store and site upkeep 
  • Broken Paddle Patio occasional breakfasts and dinners
  • General support on site, pack out, guiding at the various properties and specail events 
  • experience with canoe and gear repair an asset

2024 Spring/Summer/Fall General Operation and Canoe Trip Support guide
Voyageur Quest and the Algonquin Log Cabin are looking for outdoor staff to help support our Algonquin canoe and lodge operation. The “support” position helps the guides, the outfitter, the chef and the overall operation fill various gaps on Lodge based wilderness trips or special events including meet and greet customers, canoe lesson, assist in the preparation of meals, dishes, lodge cleaning, assist in outdoor excursions, canoe trailer loading, town run and driving truck with canoe trailer. The position does not require certification but preference is given to candidates with wilderness first aid, driver’s license and canoe instruction experience. The position requires warmth, pride in solid hospitality skills and an enthusiastic attitude to pitch in and help wherever necessary! This is an ideal position for candidates who are looking to begin a career in the adventure travel industry.

ADVENTURE TOUR COORDINATOR 
This full-time position  is a great opportunity for somebody that is looking for a progressive position within a small wilderness tour company. The  Adventure Tour Coordinator is broadly responsible for office management and day-to-day operations. Specifically, the work includes:

  • Customer service and Sales. A customer service and sales-driven orientation that despite a multi-tasking environment, you are wired for a quick response to phone and email inquiries.
  • Bookings, database management and entry, invoicing, guest details. Detailed orientation and ability to follow outlined systematic procedures and understand how administrative tasks fit into the big picture.
  • Marketing, website, and social media. Proficiency with various platforms including Mail Chimp, Hootsuite, Facebook, Instagram, Canva, WordPress/Elementor, Work with Images and Videos – ie Adobe Photoshop.
  • Quotes. Proficiency working with Excel.
  • Communications. Ongoing communications with guide and operations management team – Creating Trip manifests (Guest Details)
  • Office Management. Proficiency with Gmail, Google Docs and Google Calendar etc.

Voyageur Quest is very entrepreneurial. The Algonquin Park – Office – Adventure Tour Coordinator position carries a lot of responsibility and should be somebody who:

  • holds a University degree or Hospitality/Tourism diploma
  • is able to multitask, and is detailed oriented.

  • is confident and driven to work
  • able to work in a small studio home office setting.

Starting: $20- 26/hour commensurate with experience.

The Algonquin Housekeeping Coordinator supports the needs of the Algonquin Log Cabin, the Algonquin Cottages, the Canoe Outpost Cabins and the Algonquin VO Outfitter. The Housekeeping coordinator is responsible for:

  • cleaning and preparing our off the grid spaces for our customers pre/post check-in and for seasonal deep cleans.
  • Preparing fresh, clean, & covid safe guest spaces.
  • Cleaning to standard a variety of space types: log cabin, mainland and island cottages, cabin and bunkhouse, outfitter etc
    (can include cleaning outdoor decks, gazebo, shower house/sauna, outhouses, composting toilets)
  • Cleaning outdoor bathroom/shower houses, outhouses, composting toilets
  • Tracking and reporting damages, and/or improvements
  • Ensuring our linens are promptly sent and received to and from laundry service.
  • Keeping our cleaning supplies and linens in stock and organized in our housekeeping areas.
  • Updating and utilizing VQ housekeeping checklists
  • tracking our staff scheduling app and to follow google calendar anticipating new bookings.

Should candidates be qualified and interested – the scope of this role can be augmented with food preparation and meal service, customer check-ins, town runs, and general support activities can be added.
