Celebrate the Summer Solstice at Algonquin

In late June the light barely leaves Kawawaymog Lake. The sun is up before most alarms and the sky still glows long after dinner. Fire & Freshwater is built around that light: a weekend on Hondoo Island, at the edge of Algonquin Park, just after the summer solstice. Paddle out at dawn and cook breakfast on the shore. Swim off the dock. Breathe. Sauna, then the lake. On Saturday night a bonfire and live music carry the longest day as far as it will go. It's the same weekend Finland and Sweden head to the lake for midsummer: sauna, swims and fire.

Sunrise Canoe and a Cookout Breakfast

Saturday starts at 5 am. Coffee in hand, you slip into a canoe while the lake is still and the mist is lifting. Loons call across the water. Your guide picks a shore and cooks breakfast over the fire while the sun climbs. Back on the island by mid-morning, the rest of the day is yours until breathwork.

Floating Sauna, Lake Swims and Guided Breathwork

Breathe with Jeyda Deyna each day, on the dock or the deck. On Saturday afternoon , paddle in a a 26-foot voyageur canoe to our wood-fired floating sauna. Relax and loosen up and unwind. Jump in the clean freshwater. Repeat. Swim off Hondoo's dock whenever you like, or join a guided swim on Sunday morning.

Two Nights on Hondoo Island

Hondoo Island sits on Kawawaymog Lake at the edge of Algonquin Park, a short pontoon ride from Algonquin Access Point #1. The cottage has lake views from every room, three queen bedrooms and a twin room (it can be made up as a queen), solar power, a stone fireplace, a big deck and a swimming dock. Some guests stay in our Floathouse, a floating cabin with a queen bed and two singles. At night you'll hear the water on the rocks and the loons calling.

Not many by then. Algonquin Park’s bug season typically runs from about May 20 to June 20: black flies come out first and fade as June unfolds, and mosquitoes peak in early June. By the end of June the black flies are gone, and you’ll mostly meet mosquitoes at dusk and dawn. That’s from 35 years on these lakes, and every year is different, but the trend over the last five years has been a shorter bug season, ending by about June 15. Bring a light long-sleeved shirt and long pants for the sunrise paddle and the bonfire, plus your favourite bug spray.
Yes. There is an additional charge for specialty diets such as dairy-free, vegan or gluten-free. Please describe your needs in detail when you book. For severe allergies, bring 2 EpiPens.
